Fulfilment: Assembly, Kitting and Distribution

Some aspects of a warehousing solution require services in excess of simple order line picking. One of the more complex is assembly and kitting.

Assembly or kitting covers the need for a product to be built or picking which may have a number of components or items that make up a finished product.

For example a display stand with 60 pegs each with packs of 10 products per peg, plus signage, promotional printing etc could result in over 70 items required for a single ordered product code. A simpler example may be items which are packed individually being sold in packs of 10, which required each order to trigger the warehouse to pick 10 items.

These two extremes of the order type demonstrate the breadth and complexity in kitting and assembly. This area of a business is a key area where excess labour and costs, or more importantly mistakes are made.
